5 Fun Hobbies for Aging Adults with Limited Mobility

By 9  am on
Even if your elderly loved one has limited mobility, there are still several hobbies he or she can do to stay active while having fun. Palm Beach home care experts have put together a list of 5 hobbies that are appropriate for seniors with physical limitations.

1. Doing Puzzles

From crossword puzzles to jigsaw puzzles, your loved one will likely enjoy the challenge that comes with these games. Puzzles can help keep your loved one’s mind active because he or she will either need to come up with the right words to complete a crossword or be able to connect pieces together to create a picture with a jigsaw puzzle. Some jigsaw puzzles have larger pieces that are easier to hold instead of the smaller pieces that can sometimes get lost or are difficult to hold.

2. Sculpting

Encourage your loved one to take a class to learn how to sculpt. This is an activity your loved one can do to keep the muscles in his or her hands as active as possible. There is limited movement with sculpting, and it can expand your loved one’s imagination, allowing him or her to be creative.

3. Sewing

Your loved one can create several items for personal use or even to sell at a craft fair. There are various kinds of sewing he or she can do, including crocheting and cross-stitching. Larger hooks are ideal for seniors who can’t easily move their hands.

4. Scrapbooking

Collect pictures of your loved one’s family and friends and encourage him or her create a beautiful scrapbook. This activity not only gives your loved one something to do during the day, but it’s also a way to keep his or her memory active. Your loved one can decide which pictures and decorations to add to the pages so it’s personalized.

5. Cooking

Cooking is way for your loved one to stay busy without requiring full physical capabilities. Your loved one can bake desserts or prepare simple meals to deliver to friends or family members.
