5 New Year’s Resolutions for Caregivers

By Beth Brown, 9:00 am on

Being the primary caregiver of a senior loved one is a labor of love that comes with a lot of responsibilities. Each day, you put forth your best effort to care for him or her for as long as your services are needed, often putting your own needs on the backburner. Fortunately, you can do a few things to make next year even better than this one. By keeping the following 5 New Year’s resolutions, as suggested by the Palm Beach caregivers at Home Care Assistance, next year will be the most meaningful and fulfilling one yet.

1. Make Time for Yourself
When is the last time you enjoyed a night out with friends? If you can’t remember when you’ve last made time for yourself, things need to change. If you aren’t rested, happy, and healthy, you won’t be able to properly care for your senior loved one. Force yourself to free up at least 30 minutes of time each day. Use this much needed down time to engage in something you enjoy such as reading a book, chatting with a friend, or gardening.

2. Rely on Others
Often, one person can’t solely provide the care that an elderly relative needs. Don’t feel guilty for relying on others to help you carry out daily responsibilities. Sharing the important duties will help reduce stress and create more time for yourself. Seek out a local hourly caregiver in Palm Beach who can provide care for your loved one on a regular basis.

3. Exercise Regularly
It can be tough to stick with an exercise routine, but find something you enjoy doing like walking the neighborhood, swimming, or yoga, and make the commitment to do it at least three times a week. Folks who exercise regularly sleep better and overall feel less stressed than their inactive counterparts.

4. Become Active in a Support Group
Consider joining a support group in the upcoming year. If you can’t find one in your area, think about developing one yourself. Your support group could include other family members, friends, or other caregivers.

5. Maintain a Positive Attitude
When things get tough or you’re having a down day, take a minute or two and write out the things in your life you’re appreciative of. Maintaining a positive attitude will go a long way to making the next year of caregiving a success.

Caring for senior loved ones is as challenging as it is rewarding.
